How to keep your Timber Outdoor Furniture Clean and Long Lasting
Nothing stands in comparison when it comes to the beauty and style of timber outdoor furniture. But, in order to survive the weather and other elemental conditions, this beautiful part of your delightful living, needs care and attention. If you bought timber outdoor furniture for the first time and don’t know how to maintain it? Here are some guidelines that will help you keep your furniture look new and last long.
Mostly, the timber outdoor furniture holds off the decay naturally, but their life can be extended greatly and their color can be preserved by time to time care. The combined effect of dirt, pollen and pollution can turn the wood in dull grey and this condition is accelerated by the sun-rays and salt. So, cleaning your furniture regularly is the best way for your outdoor furniture to go a long way.
Cleaning is one of the most important things that you must consider to keep your furniture new. To prevent it from turning dull grey, it’s important to keep the surface oiled. It can be a little time consuming but it’s relatively easy to do. Before you make a move on oiling your furniture, give it a clean sweep with a stiff brush and remove the previously applied lubes. If you decide to wash it, you can take 5 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid and 1 tablespoon of bleach in a large bucket of water and clean your furniture with it. This will not only remove the dirt, but will also prevent microscopic bacteria and viruses from growing. After washing, allow it to dry completely before applying oil to it.
Keeping your timber outdoor furniture is the core key to its long life. Generally, all the woods have some of their own natural oils. But, it dries when the woods face direct sunlight and the furniture becomes completely exposed to the natural elements. Some people like the old grey look on the furniture, but if you are not one of them, then the cleaning and oiling should be done 3-4 time a year, depending on the elemental and sunlight exposure it bears. Look for oils which are water, fungi and mould resistant. Applying good quality oil or special timber outdoor furniture oil such as ‘Intergrain Nature’s Timber Oil’ helps to preserve the colors tones and patters alive but also makes it look vibrant. A clean cloth or a rag can be used to apply and distribute the oil evenly to all the parts. This should be done outside in direct sunlight so that the oil doesn’t dry before it is soaked in the wood completely. After that, wait for some time and apply 2nd coat of oil and let it dry completely.
As time passes by, your timber outdoor furniture may face loose joint condition. While cleaning and oiling your furniture, check all the joints and make sure they are tight. If you find them loose, just re-tight the nuts and bolts and also lubricate them so that they may not get rusty. Remember, if the joints are loose, it can cause actual damage the furniture and can reduce its life.
If your timber outdoor furniture starts looking old silver grey, then, don’t lose hope. There are still possibilities to restore it to its natural beauty. All you have to do is take some time out and gently sand the timber outdoor furniture until its natural color is revealed. Once the color is revealed, you can coat it with timber furniture oil or any other wood protector of your choice and keep up the regular maintenance.
If your timber outdoor furniture gets damaged it’s recommended that you talk to your local timber furniture specialist to get the best tips on how to restore or repair it.
